‘Extreme Makeover’ Home Faces Foreclosure

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

LAKE CITY, Ga. — A reality TV show’s most ambitious project three years ago has become the latest victim of the foreclosure crisis.

In January 2005, more than 1,800 people helped Beazer Homes USA and ABC’s “Extreme Makeover” team demolish a Georgia family’s decrepit home and replace it with a four-bedroom mini-mansion.

The Harper family used the home as collateral for a $450,000 loan. Now, it’s set to go to auction Aug. 5.

The couple told an Atlanta television station they received the loan for a construction business that failed.

Materials and labor were donated for the home, which would have cost about $450,000 to build. (Read the full post about ‘‘Extreme Makeover’ Home Faces Foreclosure’…)

Greene Fire Under Investigation

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

GREENE, Maine — The fire marshal’s office is investigating a fire in Greene early Thursday morning.

It broke out at about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday in an old, abandoned home near Hills Ridge Road. Officials said there were no roads leading to the house and the nearest driveway was three-quarters of a mile away. Firefighters used all-terrain vehicles to get to the scene, and by the time they arrived, the house was engulfed in flames.

The location also made it difficult to get water to the scene. Firefighters finally had the fire knocked down just before 3 a.m. Thursday.

No one was hurt in the fire. (Read the full post about ‘Greene Fire Under Investigation’…)
