Newman died Friday at age 83 after a battle with cancer.

The actor and philanthropist donated 100 percent of the profits of his “Newman’s Own” food brand to charity. To date, Newman and his company have given away more than $250 million.

Baseball Course A Hit At Maine College

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

LEWISTON, Maine — There’s a new course offering at Bates College — but you’d better sign up early if you’re going to get into this class.

Getting into the “Red Sox Nation” course at the Lewiston college is nearly as difficult as scoring a playoff ticket at Fenway Park.

History professor Margaret Creighton came up with the idea for “Red Sox Nation: Baseball and American Culture” following the Boston’s heartbreaking loss to the New York Yankees in the 2003 American League championship series.

The course was first offered at the small liberal arts college in 2005, a year after the Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years.

This year’s class is open only to freshmen, who get full academic credit toward graduation.

With only 15 openings, it took only a minute or so for the class to fill up when online registration opened.

First-year student Hope Staneski said people are jealous of the Red Sox scholars.

Heating Oil Prices Down In Maine

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine energy officials said the average cash price for No. 2 heating oil is $3.74 per gallon, 8 cents less than it was when the last survey was taken. Two weeks ago, average prices were $3.82 per gallon.

The director of the Governor’s Office of Energy Independence and Security, John Kerry, said the tumult in the financial markets has added volatility in the oil market. Kerry said expectations of a slowing economy have driven prices down.

But Kerry said consumers can also take a lot of credit for the recent drop in oil prices by cutting back on driving. He said Americans have driven 12.2 billion fewer miles through June 2008 compared with the same period in 2007. (Read the full post about ‘Heating Oil Prices Down In Maine’…)
