Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about translating menus and dining safely with MaiNeu.
What is MaiNeu?
- MaiNeu is an AI-powered menu translation and allergen detection app for travelers. Snap a photo of any restaurant menu and within seconds you get translations, allergen warnings, and an interactive ordering interface — in 50+ languages. It is your AI dining companion for eating safely abroad.
How does MaiNeu translate a menu?
- Just take a photo of the menu. MaiNeu uses AI vision to read every dish automatically and structures it into dish names, descriptions, prices, and allergen information. The whole process from photo to a bilingual menu takes about 30 seconds — no manual typing or text selection needed.
Which languages does MaiNeu support?
- Menu translation supports 50+ languages, including Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, French, Spanish, Italian, and Arabic. The app interface is available in English, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
How does allergen detection work, and is it accurate?
- MaiNeu detects 22 allergen types using three layers: direct identification (allergens written on the menu), regional recipe inference (hidden allergens common to a cuisine — for example, Taiwanese sacha sauce contains peanuts), and cooking method analysis (allergens introduced by frying or sauces). Results are shown separately as Confirmed or Possible, never as a single flat list.
Does MaiNeu need an internet connection?
- Yes. MaiNeu parses menus using cloud AI, so an internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data) is required when scanning. Menus you have already translated are saved to your history and can be viewed again anytime.
Are my menu photos and personal data safe?
- MaiNeu takes your privacy seriously. Menu photos are used only for parsing and translation, and your account data is protected. See our Privacy Policy for full details on how data is handled.
Which countries and cuisines does MaiNeu support?
- Beyond general translation, MaiNeu includes 10+ hand-built regional cuisine knowledge bases and expanding: Japan (Kanto, Kansai, Kyushu), Korea (Seoul, Busan), Thailand (Bangkok, Chiang Mai), and Taiwan. These understand the local ingredients, cooking techniques, and hidden allergens that generic translators miss.
Can I share the translated menu with my dining companions?
- Yes. After scanning once, you can generate a share link. Everyone at your table opens it in any browser and sees the full translated menu and allergen information — read-only, with no app download required. Each person can check their own allergens independently.
How do I delete my account and my data?
- You can delete your account and all its data at any time — in the app, go to Settings → Account → Delete Account, or email maineu.ai@gmail.com with the subject "Data Deletion Request". Menu photos already follow a 3-month retention limit even before deletion; see our Privacy Policy for the full details.
Is MaiNeu available on iPhone?
- MaiNeu is currently available on Android via Google Play, with the iOS app in development. In the meantime, shared menu links open in any mobile browser — including on iPhone — so dining companions can already use MaiNeu menus on iOS.
How long does a shared menu link stay active?
- By default, a shared menu link stays active for 3 days after it's created, and can be extended up to a maximum of 7 days. After it expires, the link shows an expired message instead of the menu.
